Video: Laura Watts' Taxes to End Slavery
by Austin on April 09, 2007
I’m excited to highlight an awesome idea Free the Slaves/WarSlavery supporter Laura Watts had. Check her YouTube video here …
She figured, if her taxes are supporting human trafficking, why can’t her tax refund go to ending it?
Check out her YouTube video in which she highlights the WarSlavery campaign and pledges to donate her tax refund to the Campaign. Post a reply if you’re able!
I emailed her to ask if we could plug her video. Her answer? “Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!”
That’s the sort of enthusiasm we like around here. And that’s the sort of enthusiasm it’s going to take to call the federal government to account.
In my email response to Laura I gave her a quick recap of where we are in this process. If you read the Not4Sale e-update, you’ll already know some of this:
1) Good news: As of December contractors are covered by the US law. Bad news: This system relies on self-reporting by contractors. In other words, they’re supposed to tattle on their employees.
2) Good news: Free the Slaves was invited to consult with the Dept of Defense (DoD)on their new training modules.
3) Good news: Contractors were told to return worker’s documentation. Bad news: The DoD admits that it doesn’t know if this actually happened.
4) Good news: We now know that there are 100k contractors in Iraq (before we had no idea). Bad news: Nobody knows how many sub-contractors are in Iraq.
5) Good news: More attention is being paid to this issue in Iraq. Bad news: Almost no attention is being paid to this issue in Afghanistan.
Check out Laura’s video here. If you like it, don’t forget to post a response on YouTube!
